Prenatal Education Classes - Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre

Program Information 807-684-6228

Prenatal education is offered free of charge to pregnant women and their support person. Classes begin at approximately 27 weeks gestation and prepare women for what to expect in pregnancy and during labour and delivery and the immediate postpartum period. Issues such as preterm labour, stages of labour, pain management, breathing techniques, breastfeeding and newborn care, as well as many others, will be covered by the prenatal educator. Online Prenatal Program - Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre

Program Information

The classes in this program are designed to help you to better understand pregnancy and health. These online classes are not meant to replace in-person prenatal classes and should not replace prenatal care from your health care provider. Prenatal Breastfeeding Education Class - Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre

Class Information

This class is designed for pregnant women and their partners to learn about breastfeeding. Some of the common concerns are addressed, and information is provided regarding how partners can be supportive, and overcoming some of the challenges of breastfeeding. The group is led by a lactation consultant. This group meets on the first Wednesday evening of each month. Visit website for more information and to register.

The dietitian is available to help with: guidelines for healthy eating during pregnancy, meeting increased need for vitamins/minerals, relieving nausea, vomiting, heartburn or constipation, and learning when to introduce solids to your baby. Prenatal Exercise Classes - Thunder Bay Regional Health Sciences Centre

Programs include: exercise prescription and strategies to reduce aches and pains during pregnancy, free group prenatal and postnatal exercise classes, individualized home exercise plans to match your fitness level, and postpartum assessments and help with returning to exercise safely. Healthy Babies Healthy Children - Thunder Bay District Health Unit

The Healthy Babies, Healthy Children program is a home visiting program for pregnant women and parents under six years of age. A public health nurse and family home visitor work closely to meet your needs. Both can provide advice and support about pregnancy and parenting over the phoen or in person. When needed they may also link families to support services in the community. Visits can be done in your home or where you feel comfortable. You can begin and end the program at any time. Lactation Consultant - Thunder Bay District Health Sciences Unit

The lactation consultant at our Maternity Centre is available to assist pregnant and postpartum women with education and assistance with breastfeeding. Women can book an appointment during pregnancy with the lactation consultant to become better prepared for breastfeeding and postpartum women can receive assistance with concerns or event support if breastfeeding is going well. Bosom Buddies - Thunder Bay District Health Sciences Centre

Bosom Buddies is a support group for women who are breastfeeding. Women meet at Northwood Mall with the lactation consultant and share stories and challenges. Drop-in Mondays between 2:00 – 3:00 pm.

Breastfeeding Friends & Clinic is a no charge drop-in mother to mother support group for moms and babies of all ages. Pregnant moms are welcome to attend. A Lactation Consultant from the Thunder Bay District Health Unit is available to see moms by appointment or as a drop-in as available. This group meets on Tuesday afternoons from 1-3pm at at Sherbrooke School.

Babies' Day Out - Thunder Bay District Health Unit

Program Information

The Babies' Day Out Program is for parents of babies from newborn to one year of age. This program is an opportunity to meet other parents, share information about baby care, discuss lifestyle issues, and learn about baby growth and development. Program Information

Best Start Hubs offer children and their families a place to meet, to learn and to grow together. Programs are offered for families with children up to 6 years of age. In these programs parents, caregivers and children have the opportunity to participate in a variety of activities that encourage interaction through play, peer support, and healthy development. Our Kids Count

Program Information

Our Kids Count is a community-based program that works with families whose children are 6 and under. At these centres, parents are able to register for skill building and/or educational programs, while their children are cared for by trained Early Childhood Education workers. Examples of programs include community kitchens, parenting, and budgeting.

NorWest Community Health Centres

The Community Health Centres' prenatal and parenting programs provide you with information about pregnancy, and how to take care of yourself and your new baby. Through these programs you get ideas on how to stretch your budget, how to improve your nutrition, and how to promote your child's development and self-esteem.

Take Control is a free one-on-one cessation counselling program. During the program, clients will meet with a Tobacco Treatment Specialist to create an individualized "quit plan" and be offered in person support as needed during their quit and after to support them in their new tobacco-free life!
